I was always blaming my Internet connection for my most favorite e-commerce site’s frequent downtime. However, it later turned out that my Spectrum double play package was offering the best Internet speed and the website was at fault for not optimizing its speed. This resulted in a major inconvenience for many users.
However, curious I researched on the topic and learned that there are tricks by which you can optimize your website speed.
Avoid Nested Tables
It is a surprise that many webs developers still make the mistake of adding nested tables to their websites. Or anyone’s website that they are working for. Web developers should be aware of the fact that nesting the tables adds further burden on the website and affects its loading time.
If you really want to add tables to the website, try resorting to the non-nested versions. Moreover, you can always make use of floats as well as grids to improve the HTML loading speed on the website. The loading speed of the page is a crucial aspect because even a 1-second delay can lead to 11% fewer page reviews and 7% loss in conversions (Source: https://www.crazyegg.com/blog/speed-up-your-website/).
If you employ the use of floats, you can deal with this problem as floats facilitate in rendering the image beside text in a much faster way. Same is the case with grids. They facilitate users to employ and create modern site layouts. They do so by using CSS.
Make the Redirects Cacheable
Another way of speeding up your websites’ speed is by making your landing page redirects cacheable. Mobile pages often redirect users to a different URL. However, you can get rid of this problem if you make a cacheable redirect. It helps to speed up the page load time. You should use a 302 redirect in order to avoid this problem.
Pagination and Comments Section
One cannot do without a comments section. Whether it is on your brand’s social media page or the website, a comments section is essential. Because it gives the customers or the viewers the feeling that their views matter. And they do, actually. Without the suggestions made by the customers, you won’t be able to improve yourself.
While you cannot do without a comments section, there is a little issue. A busy website that hosts thousands of viewers is mostly overflowing with a gazillion comments. This slows down the loading speed of the website.
To fix this issue, it is recommended that you add pagination to the comments section.
You also need to upgrade to PHP 7.1 if you have not already. Alternatively, have overlooked this aspect by any chance. It is not easy to upgrade your website every time a new version launches. Agreed. However, the time you spend upgrading will save you from the negative effect that not upgrading might bring to your business.
There is a reason why new software launch. The upgraded versions are always better and improved forms of the previous ones. Therefore, it is necessary that you also upgrade to enjoy batter speeds.
Time to do Some Installing
Apart from that, it also allows Page Caching, database optimization, and browser caching. Tests conducted in the past revealed that installing WP Rocket Plugin reduced the loading speed by 65% which is a rather impressive figure.
Inclusion of a Trailing Slash
Adding trailing slashes at the end all the links that point towards your website is important. There is a simple logic involved in this. If you do not add a slash, then the server will look for a website with that name. This will create an unnecessary 301 redirect. After all the efforts when the server is unable to find the website address that you mention, it will look for one in the directory. Hence, creating an unnecessary burden on the server.
All this will lead to a reduction in the performance of your website. This means that the website will also take time to load. To avoid all this, it is recommended to add a trailing slash. A little effort made can save you from a lot of trouble later.
Reduction of Visual Content
You will also need to figure out a way to go about the amount of visual content on your website. It is not at all a wise idea to clutter your webpage with a huge amount of images, gifs, and videos. These lead to the reduction in the loading time of the webpage. Hence, irritating the viewers.
Instead of adding images or videos on your webpage or website, you can consider adding links to them. You should also pay attention to the size of the images. Try to keep them small. Your aim should be to have a clean interface and uncluttered website.
Hotlinking- NO WAY
In order to speed up your website, you also need to take steps when it comes to hot linking. Disallow it. Hot linking refers to the practice of other sites using images that your server hosts. This wastes a huge amount of bandwidth. Because the server remains busy in its quest to entertain a huge number of requests, the website’s loading speed slows down.
All you need to do is add a small piece of code in order to avoid or disallow hot linking.
The Webpage Test
Even if you are trying to keep the images to a minimum and have applied most of the tricks to speed up your website’s speed, you need to take the webpage test. This will help you to see where you actually stand. And were all those efforts worth it or not.
Webpage testing allows you to point out any major flaws in your site speed. All you need to do is add the domain that you want to test. It will then point out all the areas or elements that are affecting the speed of your page.
Do not make the mistake of adding CSS in between the pages. This will not only increase the workload on the browser but it will also slow down your website. It is always the best idea to add CSS on top of your page to avoid any progressive rendering.
Say Bye to Unused Media
You do not need to keep holding on to the unused media. Simply remove it. This is one of the most simple but overlooked tactics to speed up your website’s speed. Your server might be overloaded with images or unused media files. Hence, the increase in loading time.
Therefore, have a look at the media that you are not using, remove it and free up space on your website.
Decreasing your website’s load time is not a big issue. You can fix it with these easy tricks. Hadn’t it been for my web developer friend I would have unsubscribed my Spectrum packages. But knowledge came right at the time when the company was about to lose a loyal customer.
